Starting to do some hill intervals. Achilles are both sore but respond well to NSAIDS and ice after runs and gentle stretching before runs. I can run with them at their current level of soreness. This is the best condition been in for a few years. In 4 weeks will try a 5K for time. Goal will be 21 minutes. If I can get in 3 good weeks of tempo runs and fartlacks this might be possible. August 15.......we'll see. Work to do before then.

wet winter wonderland

Steady rain for 2 days.....nasty outdoors. Wimped out and went treadmill past two days. 4.4 yesterday......4.65 today. Beats not running. Actually tried 5 minutes of elliptical after both runs. Pretty tough after the time on the treadmill. Oh well, any leg work at this time of year is good leg work. Will make april and may easier. No great time on the treadmill.....started at 7.2 miles/hr and worked up to 9m/hr for the last 5 minutes each day. No grade..........I hate hills on a treadmill--to risky for the achilles unless I'm really feeling frisky.

New Year

Doing well outdoors. 5 miles today......slow for 3 (9 min/mi) then about 7/6:30 the last two. Faster felt better. Lots to do to get under 18 min 5K but the next four mos will help build a good base while increasing speed slowly.. Plan for more interval work and hill work by about April. By July should be humming along nicely. It's all in how the legs hold up. Back to 4-5 miles per day. I'm starting to alternate treadmill runs with outdoor runs. I'm hoping to keep things going through the winter anticipating some 5K runs in late spring 2009. Just turned 50 so I have to teach myself patience and not try to do too much too soon. This is definitely my favorite time of the year to run though....cool weather. When you are my age there are aches and pains and chronic injuries that will attempt to dissuade you from running. So, either give up running altogether and become a swimmer, or deal with them. Here's how I do it. Stay tuned.
